Six and a half weeks ago, I (30F) let my dog out around 11 pm when a cat ran into my house and would not leave. My partner and I were setting up a room in our townhouse to hopefully adopt a cat soon, and the cat ran right into that room and hunkered down.

The next morning, we called our leasing office to have an email sent out to all the tenants in case this sweet baby was theirs. We took her to the vet.. No microchip, not spayed, about 8(ish) months a year old. Our vet said we had 7 days until she was legally ours (this is the law in our state). We posted on

Facebook, created flyers to post at local vet offices, and our vet called animal control to ensure that we were following all the proper channels to get this baby back to their home, if she had one.

Seven days came and went, so we got to work. We got her microchipped, spayed, updated vaccines, and decked out our whole house with places for her to climb, explore, and play. She got a name, she got comfortable, and she now follows my partner and me into every room we enter... She is the absolute light of our lives.

Fast forward to tonight. A teenager knocked on my door and said they saw our cat in the window, and said it looks just like theirs that got out of their house about a month ago... They ask to see a picture, and we oblige. Their father walks out to join the conversation.... It's our literal

next-door neighbors, with whom we share a wall on one side. Sure enough, they also share a picture; it's hard to argue that it's not her, she has very distinct patterns on her face. They asked for the cat back, we said she's bonded with us, she's comfortable, we put all this work into making sure we took the proper steps to get her taken care of... Also, you never looked for her? So, no.

They claimed they never saw the email that was sent out to all the tenants, but we got it, and other neighbors confirmed they got it, too. No missing cat flyers in the neighborhood, no lost cat post on Facebook, no calls to animal control, or the local shelters looking for their lost cat. We

know, because we checked. Also, we live right next door and never saw them out looking for her, never heard them calling for her; they never left food out for her, or brought out her litter box to try and draw her back. We have been outside at the same time as them, and none of them ever mentioned a missing cat. The father vaguely threatened legal action, and that's where we left the conversation.

Legally, we own the cat. Morally, I'm feeling conflicted. Also, I don't want to make enemies of my neighbors, but I can't even think of sending her back to a house that didn't even look for her. :-(

peppered_yolk NTA. Legally, you own the cat. Morally, you actually provided vet care for the cat. Why didnt they get her chipped or fixed if they love her so much? Or even check the shelter? No, this baby is yours. Please, please do not give her back. You would be

setting her up for failure. But let your apartment complex know that your neighbor has threatened you. Keep your doors and windows locked at all times. You dont want to provide any opportunity for them to steal your cat. They 100% neglected that cat and now she is happy and loved by you.

Lower_Top9940 Nta, the cat has chosen you. Legally the cat is also yours! So if both the law and the cat dont object rhen really he has no standing over you. The dad sounds like a irresponsible guy. But maybe the teen (if theyre young) could be allowed to come in and hang out with the cat sometimes? Losing a pet isnt easy, and it may not be the teens fault.

javlafan2 If the photos verify this s the same cat say you will return the cat to them if they reimburse you for the expense of the shots, chipping and spaying. Cash up front!

SharpenedGourd YTA because why the h I did you get all of that done in literally A WEEK? Seven days and you decided to do that? No the cat hasn't "bonded" with you, it's been literally one month.

That cat has a family already. Not a particularly dedicated one, but it feels INSANE to me that you can "legally own" a cat who is ALREADY OWNED after SEVEN DAYS.

The last time I found a cat, you know what I did? Printed "Is this your cat?" posters and hung them. Put out pics on Facebook lost pets pages. Knocked on neighbours doors and asked if they know anyone with a missing cat. Found the owner pretty fast.

Do what you will. The law, bizarrely, supports you. I personally think you're not that emotionally attached to this animal, you're more just mad you spent all this money on him that you can't get back. Which you shouldn't have done. When I got a stray, it was first of all,

confirmed a stray by his health at the vet, and I only chipped him after a good while to make sure I'm the one who's actually keeping him. Just ask them to reimburse you and you'll give them the cat after, if you're so bothered by It.

There's a kid there who clearly misses his animal, even if you decided he doesn't miss him "enough".
  • 23
Broad Respond_2205 The cat senses you're good people that would care (and notice if he was missing...) about him so they choose you instead. NTA.

Ruebee90 NTA! They obviously weren't taking good care of the cat if she was not chipped or fixed at 8 months to a year. Keep the cat!!
